Thanks David, this is an extremely valuable synopsis, and another block of evidence for the morale/engagement and performance connection. Loved the quotes, including the one above about weighing the pig not making it fat...priceless! Of course morale/engagement have always been about more than surveys, but this will push that fact forward, without throwing the measurement baby out with the bathwater.

Greetings David,

I have not been receiving your past newsletter. Then, suddenl I got the one on "David's 5 Employee Engagement". I hope the glitch got solved by itself !

Your work on EE is great and crucial in shifting the awareness into buy-in and action. The entire world has suffered on trust and how else can we ever rebuild if not, as you aptly capture in your defination, with AUTHENTIC and genuiness.

I fully concur and believe it takes leadereship, the first of the 4 drivers to start the ball rolling and to walk the talk. I am beginning to see a major paradigm shift in governments leading the way in adopting transformational changes in management that points towards greater corporate governance and talent management practices. Sad to say, we are not seeing the same level of confidence and "authentic" trust within the bottomom-line profit driven corporate/private sector.

I am of the opinion the professional HR bodies and workforce communities ought to campaign the legitimate need of leadership accountability for the people side of business be given depth and significance in auditing the level of corporate governance. Would a company see and treat EE as a CSF and hold it against the CEO's KPI.

Instead of waiting for self and market regulations, people should call for stronger representation of "authentic" leadership behaviour and actions. Which is more effective ?. Preaching awareness to those who "just don't get it" or introducing the necessary regulatory measures in "getting compliance".

I have certainly made many people in Canada aware of it as there is much to learn from it here.

David. An excellent article that zeroes in on key aspects of the report. One observation I would offer is that despite being a major report and having significant sponsorship from central government and BIS; there does appear to be a distinct lack of broad business awareness of it amongst employers as to its existence. We will of course continue in our efforts to put raise its profile and get it the airing it truly deserves. Great job.

Wow David. Can't believe I missed this great interpretation of MacLeod, must have been when the lights went out in my IT world for a little while. The enthusiasm in your piece is brilliant. As one who made a small contribution to the report I'm delighted to see you sharing it in this way. Good work!

I agree, it is a great report, and it is wonderful that the government is being urged to put its weight (and resources) behind promoting employee engagement.

If I could add a number 22 from the report, my favourite quote is one from Andrew Templeman, of the Cabinet Office
Capability Building Programme who said: “No one ever got a pig fat by weighing it”.

Although measurement (surveys) is an important part of understanding your workforce, real engagement comes from getting down and engaging with your workforce - not just analysing facts and figures.

"Get with it people."

I love it. My favorite of the 21. At some point, you'd think the evidence was so clear and inarguable that everyone would take the plunge.

If not now, when? What more do people need to see? Employee engagement is an obvious winner.
