South Africa Mining Excellence. It was both an honor and a privilege to be invited to address OPEX12, The Operational Excellence in Mining Conference, in South Africa this month. Geoff Ronaldson, a consultant involved in lean thinking, business improvement, social interaction systems and coaching using SYMLOG, Kolbe Conative Index and Mission Directed Work Teams, invited to me speak on engagement and mining. Using a variety of tools and perspectives I believe Geoff, Peter, and their team are doing some very impressive work in the mining industry. The conference was very informative and included a tour of a local platinum smelter. I was tremendously impressed by the work of the operational teams and their use of visual data to carry on their supervision and management of the operations.
