First, Molly may indeed be learning the lessons you suggest and if she is, it probably has something to do with you and Molly talking about this. Molly, or others like her, can just as easily learn very different lessons from the same situation, primarily, that if you&#039;re the boss you can to be a jerk without paying a visible price.

You&#039;re dead right about the impact of the immediate boss. In my career I&#039;ve seen pockets of excellence in otherwise awful organizations and pockets of dread and low productivity in otherwise excellent organizations. It&#039;s the boss that makes the difference.</description>

Inevitably, when I question them I discover that the supervisor and co-workers account for the difference.  Hiring and promoting the right people into leadership positions accounts for so much of store-to-store variation when it comes to employee engagement.  The best leaders tend to hire better workers who share their values of fairness, empathy, kindness, excellence, optimism, personal responsibility, etc.</description>
