Dolores:
That sounds like a very tough situation where you are quite thwarted. I appreciate the approach of Crucial Conversations to approach this situation. Know what you want, make it safe, share the facts, tell your story, and see what happens. If your boss does not respond then you need to determine your options. Do you stay working there? Do you look for other opportunities? Are transfers possible? If you go above your boss to voice this what are the consequences? Are there 360 degree evaluations where feedback can be given about your boss?
As you can see lots of questions and you know there are no simple answers.

I would like to know how I can work with a boss who is a micromanager and who leads by establishing and maintaining a hierarchal work environment. It is an academic work place. The "worker bees" are not communicated to, are not respected and are not included in conversations, plans, goals, etc. Much of this happens to good employees who have an impeccable work ethic and personal employee file. I feel squelched, frustrated that I cannot do what I have lots of energy to do and is within reasonable expectations of myself in terms of growth. I can't seem to reach my boss. Help!
