Career Zingers #9: Standing naked in the locker room

January 18, 2018 by David Zinger Leave a Comment

Running the career race: What did you leave behind?

I was in the change room at the gym today. One gentleman arrived at the gym to suddenly realize he had left his gym clothes at home. He bemoaned, “I was in such a hurry when I left home I just forgot my clothes and I have been so busy today I didn’t even realize I forgot them until  I got here.” As we race off in our career we may inadvertently leave something, or even someone important, behind. Perhaps you inadvertently left a very favoured activity behind or maybe you achieved tremendous financial success and work accolades only to realize that you left your spouse or family behind because you failed to give them the attention they deserved. Take just one minute each day to ensure that you have both what you need, and who you need, as you move forward in your career. There is no point arriving at your destination and end up standing naked in the locker room because you forgot your clothes at home.

Career Zingers #8: Constructing Our Career

January 15, 2018 by David Zinger Leave a Comment

Career Zinger: Constructive Thinking Trumps Positive and Negative Thinking

Art at Louvre Museum in Doha – David Zinger

I am not a fan of either positive thinking or negative thinking because they are both shallow and too one-sided. Sometimes good things are not as good as we thought or bad things turn out to be good in time. Good things happen for a variety of reasons and bad things will inevitably occur. Experiences involve more than our thinking yet thinking is a tremendous force in career development. That’s why I advocate constructive thinking. Regardless of what occurs determine what you can construct out of the experience. Our careers can be viewed as large and lengthy self-structures built over time. As you develop your career, hard hats are optional, but know that regardless of where you are on your career path, be it your first job or deep into retirement, your career is always “under construction.” I invite you to conclude this career zinger with a poem I wrote inspired by Warsaw.

Engaging Zingers #5: Be Resolute Without Being Coercive

Career Zingers #5: Be Resolute, Don’t Be Coercive.

Ah, New Year’s Day signals a time when many of us make resolutions to advance our career or begin the 100 other self-improvement initiatives we scheme up. The good news is that we don’t resist change but the bad news is we resist coercion. We can be quite self-coercive with our own career development. Trying to make ourselves or force ourselves to be better. This sows the seeds for failure. For 2018, I encourage you to be resolute without being coercive.

I’m David Zinger, engage along with me, the best is yet to be.

Career Zingers #2: How to have an engaging career in 2018

Too often we view career development as aspirations, goals, and future results. In our pursuit of the future we miss the living moment of our career. To have an amazing career in 2018 ensure you don’t miss where you really are in a blind craving and endless pursuit of where you want to be.

Engaging Zingers #1: The Wooden Yardstick

December 25, 2017 by David Zinger Leave a Comment

Career Engagement: Incomparable.

Merry Christmas. I hope the gift you open on Christmas day is yourself.

Comparing yourself or your career development to others is to transform yourself into a wooden yard stick. You may be able to measure things but you are no longer human. The next time you feel jealous, diminished, or envy of another person, ask yourself:

Do I want to be a wooden yard stick or a living human being who is simply incomparable?
