Employe Engagement: Why We Need to Treat Employees More Like Smart Phones

April 27, 2016 by David Zinger 2 Comments

Get Smart with Your Employees

Samsung Phone

Don’t get the title of this post wrong. I am not suggesting we depersonalize employees and treat them like objects. What I am suggesting is we treat employees as well as most of us treat our smart phone.

Here is what I mean:

  • We never get too far away from our phone.
  • We make ourselves available to our phone almost all the time.
  • We gaze at the screen with a powerful focus.
  • We recharge our phone every day.
  • We rely on our phone.

So here are the 5 employee engagement lessons:

  1. stay close to your employees
  2. make yourself available,
  3. really look at your employees many times throughout the day,
  4. charge employees up each day,
  5. rely on your employees.

Employee Engagement: Gathering is Our Work

December 15, 2015 by David Zinger Leave a Comment

3 Men in a Boat

3 Men in a Boat

Do you gather before you start your work? Do you see gathering as part of work.

In Turkey, I watched these three men gather before they began to get their boat ready to cast off. They seemed so connected and joined being with each other.

I encourage you to gather before you work by taking time to check-in with each other or to huddle or to chat a bit over the phone or text a bit on the computer. We do not get work done through relationships, we get work done with relationships so remember that relationships, not just tasks, are your work.

David Zinger is an employee engagement expert and speaker who believes engagement can help us to make both relationships and results more robust.

No Time for Employee Engagement? Really?

August 4, 2015 by David Zinger Leave a Comment

Reading time: 54 seconds

Here is a headline from an engagement article from last week.

Who’s Got Time to Manage Employee Engagement?

I liked the post and the argument. I appreciated Johnathan Bright’s conclusion:

It is, as ever, a question of trust. The other question is of time. So, managers, get the results of your survey, find out the needs, set your KPIs, and then get the help of someone with the time and know how to implement the right strategy. After all, you’ve got other stuff to be getting on with.

To me, we need to weave engage into “the other stuff.” I fully concur with the lack of time available so rather than an extra lets ensure engagement is woven into the fabric of work with small, simple, strategic, structural, and sustainable actions.

I am currently working on 11 simple rules of employee engagement based on the 5 S’s stated above and derived from the 10-block pyramid of employee engagement.

Employee Engagement: Good is the New Great

February 17, 2015 by David Zinger Leave a Comment

Why good is good enough in employee engagement.

Reading time = 1 minute.

Slide1

We need to keep things simple and real with employee engagement. I think when we move to superlatives such as great work and exceptional engagement we create a credibility gap and a trust issue. I have been in a number of workplaces that declared they were great workplaces yet many employees tell me it is not as great as they say.

My definition of employee engagement is short, real, and simple:

Good work done well with others every day.

Good work is both believable and attainable and sustainable. When we strive for good we will at time touch great or exceptional. I will take consistent good days of work over a few great days anytime. I also like how good work done with both intention and consistency will at times touch greatness.

I like good in reference to employee engagement because it refers to both the adjective of good or the quality of work and the noun of good about the benefit of the work. I like work that is of good quality and is good on many levels for employees, customers, and the organization.

I hope you have a good day of work that is also good for others.

Employee Engagement Gratitude From David Zinger

Thank you and all the best in employee engagement in 2015

Harry Wyatt Snow Falling

This is a picture taken from my office window yesterday.

It has been a pleasure to travel around the world in 2014 working on employee engagement and it is a a treasure to be home. I am so grateful for how much I learned about employee engagement this year from people in Singapore, Dubai, St. John’s Newfoundland, Washington DC, and so many other locations. I also learned so much from all of you who are talking about employee engagement online.

All the best as we move forwards and towards 2015.
