Career Zingers #11: A Fresh Start

January 22, 2018 by David Zinger Leave a Comment

There is the possibility of growing in the most difficult of places

New Year’s Day is fading fast in our rearview mirror. Perhaps you dreamed of a career change or made a career resolution and broke it. You believe all is lost, thinking now you’ll wait until your birthday in late August to make a fresh start on your career.

When can we start over? The truth is, anytime. The next moment invites you to begin again. And the moment after sends a second invitation. And each moment does this again and again and again. Don’t dither, postpone, or procrastinate on career change for a special event or specific date on the calendar. Close the door on real or imagined setbacks and open the door for a fresh start right now. And if this fresh start doesn’t proceed as planned the next moment after that is a great time to begin.

David Zinger educates and coaches for career, employee, work, and leadership engagement. He loves reading and weeding.

Career Zingers #9: Standing naked in the locker room

January 18, 2018 by David Zinger Leave a Comment

Running the career race: What did you leave behind?

I was in the change room at the gym today. One gentleman arrived at the gym to suddenly realize he had left his gym clothes at home. He bemoaned, “I was in such a hurry when I left home I just forgot my clothes and I have been so busy today I didn’t even realize I forgot them until  I got here.” As we race off in our career we may inadvertently leave something, or even someone important, behind. Perhaps you inadvertently left a very favoured activity behind or maybe you achieved tremendous financial success and work accolades only to realize that you left your spouse or family behind because you failed to give them the attention they deserved. Take just one minute each day to ensure that you have both what you need, and who you need, as you move forward in your career. There is no point arriving at your destination and end up standing naked in the locker room because you forgot your clothes at home.

Engaging Zingers #7: Invitational Career Development

Career Zinger #7: Invitational Acceptance

In Dubai (David Zinger 2017)

In 2018, as you strive to enhance your career I encourage you to avoid being coercive with yourself because when you are coercive you set yourself up for guilt and failure. You can end up transforming part of yourself that is an ally into an adversary. A powerful way to change this is to frame your desired career change as a personal invitation, not a dogmatic imposition. I like receiving invitations. I don’t like feeling I am being pushed into something — even when I am pushing myself. Declining an invitation does not feel fatal nor final. Career development requires a caring and careful approach to embark down a new of different path.  A career goal is not a career gaol – break out of the mental jail of bullying yourself to change yourself.

Engaging Zingers #5: Be Resolute Without Being Coercive

Career Zingers #5: Be Resolute, Don’t Be Coercive.

Ah, New Year’s Day signals a time when many of us make resolutions to advance our career or begin the 100 other self-improvement initiatives we scheme up. The good news is that we don’t resist change but the bad news is we resist coercion. We can be quite self-coercive with our own career development. Trying to make ourselves or force ourselves to be better. This sows the seeds for failure. For 2018, I encourage you to be resolute without being coercive.

How much time do you have for employee engagement?

Act Different #1

Few of us ever have all the time we want to engage fully with what matters most to us, yet none of us should make that an excuse to do nothing.

Engagement is good work done well with others every day. Before you exit this post, determine how much time you have today for engagement. Your time available could range from one minute to a couple of hours. Now commit yourself to your available moment, minute or hours to do good work well with others.

Engage along with me, the best is yet to be.
