ZENgagement: Seize Now

Seize engagement now…

Are you in earnest? Seize this very minute! Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Only engage, and then the mind grows heated. Begin, and then the work will be completed.  ~ John Anster

    Hello David:

Your site is truly sticky :) . I like the way you used the survey feedback on your about page.

Can I ask, in your experience, are there any drawbacks to using humour in counselling?

    Hi Galba,

Sticky would be good and strengths are essential to me for myself and working with others.

In my Master’s thesis on humour in counselling I used the metaphor of a plastic 2-edge sword. We should not take humour too seriously.

One edge is the postive functions from reframing, relationship building, perspective etc. The negative side is always laughing things off or using humour to mask aggression - punch line, split a gut, you’ll die when you hear this one, etc. Sarcasm is often destructive humour - I believe it is from the Greek (sarkasmos) which meant to tear flesh.

For the most part, humour has been both a strength and a strong way of caring as happiness is heightened when we use our strength in the service of others.

    Hello David:

Thanks for your response. Nicely put. Being able to use humour appropriately in a workplace setting is a great gift. Thanks also for the link.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT enriches everyone in the workplace. It is not sucking out more discretionary effort from employees.

Authentic employee engagement must function for the benefit of all: employees, leaders, organizations, and customers.

Employees have higher levels of satisfaction and contribution. Leaders are connected with employees and engaged themselves. The organization is functioning the way it should and customers are receiving the service they deserve.

Ultimately everyone is getting results that matter to them.

When this occurs, employee engagement transforms into a more powerful force --- workplace engagement.
