Are you changed by work?
Working on work as work works on you. I had a two-cent epiphany today. I think we are fully engaged in work when work changes us in a more constructive, richer, or complete way. Have you ever been working on something and then you realize it has been working on you? You realize you have been changed by your work perhaps without any intention for that to happen on your part.
Zinger gets a stinger. I have been doing a 3 year project on bees, hives, work, organizations, communities, and social media (See: www.zinghive.com). I was entering the second year of the project when it suddenly hit me, David Zinger just experienced a stinger. I was being changed by the work I was doing. I was not just working on it, the work was working on me. The work was both evolutionary and transformational. Without intent or design my work was changing my thinking, beliefs, approach, and perhaps even identity in how I see work, engagement, community, social media, and myself.
Transformational working. I will articulate the transformational elements of work in a later post as I come to understand, experience, and express it more fully. But for now, I encourage you to reflect and perhaps even write in the comment section of this blog on how work has transformed you. Here are two questions for your consideration:
- Have you been working on your work then suddenly realize your work was also working on you?
- What was the work, and how were you changed?
