Read and apply Dr. Ned Hallowell’s Shine.
Ed Hallowell is one of my favorite nonfiction authors after writing CrazyBusy: Overstretched, Overbooked, and About to Snap! Strategies for Coping in a World Gone ADD. He just released a new book, Shine: Using Brain Sciences to Get The Best from Your People.
In Shine, Dr. Hallowell outlines 5 steps managers and leaders and take to create peak performance in their people:
- Select
- Connect
- Play
- Grapple and Grow
- Shine
Hallowell offers a clear and concise book on the how to get the most from people. The key ideas are listed at the end of each chapter and the last chapter offers a summary of the 5 steps and how they interact. It is an easy book to read and a good road map to follow to foster enhanced employee engagement.
Here is a sample of Dr. Hallowell’s recommendations:
- Help people determine what adds value to their organization or world.
- Find the marginalized people and try to bring them in.
- Create a culture of questioning anything and everything.
- Be more of a catalyst than an answer as you help others grapple and grow.
- Recognize achievement and growth mind-sets or optimism
I encourage you to buy the book and practice the principles. As a bonus to the review I encourage you to watch this 10 minute HBR ideacast video interview with Dr. Hallowell on the path to peak performance.
