Employee Engagement Friday Factoid #8: Social Media Wasteland

Zinger Friday Factoid #8: Employee Social Media Wasteland?

Each social media user, according to learnstuff.com costs their company $4452.00 every year. (http://www.learnstuff.com/social-media-at-work/)

Commentary

When it comes to social media in an organization it is good to have an open mind but not so open that your brains fall out. I like this factoid because it makes us think about the potential waste and drain to an organization because of employee involvement in social media. On the other hand social media can be a brilliant tool to enhance results, performance, interpersonal connection, and recognition. What do we need to do to ensure that social media is a contributor not a cost?

Zinger Friday Factoid #7: Becoming a High Performance Company

High performing companies demonstrate the value they place on their people by

  • being open and honest in communications (65 per cent favorable, +10 over the general industry norm)
  • showing concern for employees’ health and safety (80 per cent, +5).
  • taking employee interests into account when making decisions (66 per cent, +11)
  • informing employees of reasons behind decisions that affect them (61 per cent, +11).

From the Hay Group High Performing White Paper 2012.

Commentary

To foster high performance and strong engagement the pathway resides in open and honest communication, concern for employee health and safety, factoring in employee interests when making decision and letting employees know the reasons behind decisions that affect them.

Employee Engagement Friday Factoid #6: Canadian Wellbeing

Zinger Friday Factoid: Economics and Wellbeing in Canada

The second Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW) composite report shows in the seventeen year period from 1994 to 2010, Canada’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by a robust 28.9% while our quality of life only improved by a very modest 5.7%. Further, it reveals Canadian wellbeing dropped by 24% between 2008 and 2010 and the decline in our wellbeing continues despite subsequent economic recovery. Commentary

These facts indicate to me that economic development is not sustainable without wellbeing development. When I think of employee engagement, I always think of employee engagement for the benefit of all. These facts indicate that this is broken. We need to create a stronger bond between economics and wellbeing for the good of employees, individuals, families, organizations, the economy, and out country.

Employee Engagement: Your Friday Factoid #1

September 21, 2012 by David Zinger Leave a Comment

Zinger Friday  Factoid

Hewitt reported a few years back, ” the analysis found that organizations with high engagement are 78 percent more productive and 40 percent more profitable than those organizations with low levels of engagement. Those with disengaged employees had an average profit loss of $8,000 to $10,000 profit each year for each disengaged employee.

Commentary

Employee engagement is so much more than a free lunch or a happy YouTube recruiting dance. It is big business and big in business when disengagement results in a profit loss of up to $10,000 for each disengaged employee. We must be mindful of our numbers and not let disengaged employees become numb to their impact. If you are a manager know that it may be well worth your effort and time to work at transforming a disengaged employee into an engaged employee.
