Take Note: Play and Hear the Music of Work (Poem)

December 16, 2009 by David Zinger 5 Comments

Like a bird on the wire ~ Leonard Cohen

bird notes

We need more music

in our workplaces.

Not insipid elevator tunes,

ear bud iTunes isolation,

or another recruiting video in the form of a lip sync office dance party.

Rather, music that joins and moves us.

Don’t

blow your own horn,

trumpet out a new program,

or drum something into us.

Teach us to hear and make the music

that resides within us, between us,

and from the results of our efforts.

Let’s orchestrate a

co-created symphony of heartfelt work.

with  Zander-like shining eyes,

goose bumps on our arms,

and notable work taking us from wire to wire.

A very enjoyable poem – I love the word co-created and use it a lot. Very satisfying read, good brain food. And the Zander reference has left me feeling hungry! Tummy food to follow.

    Thanks for the nourishment.

well done, I especially like the reference to Benjamin Zander’s shining eyes! He did a wonderful TED Talk.

    Steve:
Zander is A+ and says we should give everybody one. Wow, would that be a powerful starting place on a performance review.

    Doug,
Ever since first encountering co-creation in improvisation and social media is has been a great concept for me. I believe we are in the co-created workplace and as a presenter and keynoter I see all my presentations as being co-created by the interactions of the audience even if they never say a word.

David. I agree – I think the power of being with people and co-creating is great. And I try and remember to thank everyone – silence is useful too sometimes. Good stuff. Sorry about my rather obscure zander reference earlier – I just started (and then couldn’t stop) thinking about the fishy swimmy kind, ha ha!

    Cheers – Doug
